Study Abroad
Getting Started
Your first step is to Challenge Your Assumptions:
- Studying abroad for a semester can cost less than a campus semester.
- Financial aid is transferable and some programs offer scholarships.
- You can receive credit for CORE, your major, or elective coursework.
- Short-term programs are available during the summer and winter terms.
- All majors can study abroad.
Your
next step is to figure out where you would like to go. Have you ever dreamed
of visiting the great city of London? Or maybe you would like to stroll
along the streets of Italy or visit the little cafes of Paris, France. What
to do next is Find the Perfect Program:
- Print out this worksheet for your reference.
- Visit the Study Abroad website.
- Look to see what programs your major may offer.
- Search online for non-Maryland Study Abroad programs related to your major.
- Decide on how long you plan to study.
- Schedule an appointment to talk with you academic advisor about choosing a program that's right for you.
- Attend a General Advising Session
Don't forget! Some programs require one or more language courses prior to your trip.
Many Study Abroad programs offer scholarships and aid. Next you may want to Research Available Financial Aid:
- Find study abroad scholarships at the National Scholarship Office.
- Consider applying for the College Park Scholars Co-curricular Scholarship for support.
- Students who currently receive financial aid can transfer it toward Studying Abroad. For more information, visit a financial aid counselor. In the mean time, check out these FAQ.
College Park Scholars also has small scholarship opportunities for students who are planning to study abroad and for those who have completed their programs successfully. For those planning to study abroad, the Co-curricular Scholarship provides financial assistance to Scholars students who could benefit from support for their participation in Scholars sponsored travel study experiences. Students interested in applying for support should contact Dr. Greig Stewart, Executive Director of Scholars.
