CPSP 239T Students who have completed STS-related internships or summer jobs may enroll in CPSP 239T. To seek permission prior to enrolling, write up a description of your experience and email Dr. Mendelsohn. Earning credit for an internship takes planning during your freshman year. You need to keep your eyes open for opportunities next summer, even in the fall semester. Take seriously the CPSP 118T assignments about interviewing faculty, learning about campus research, revising resumes, and talking to recruiters at campus jobfairs. Each student should consult the University Career Center and the Engineering Co-op and Career Center. This seminar meets 6 times, enabling students to practice speaking about the significance of their work to their peers from other disciplines. Each student researches and writes a 6 page essay that relates their experience to broader themes in science, technology and society. Students are required to draw on peer-reviewed literature and other authoritative documents. The syllabus linked above shows you the flow of work. Beginning in Fall 2009, students prepare an illustrated talk about their undergraduate research, which they deliver to the freshman colloquium (CPSP 118T). Additional opportunities in CPSP 239T: A. Design-your-own practicum: Students wishing to learn a skill or apply a skill may propose their own activity for CPSP 239T. Examples include learning GIS or CAD, applying a programming language to a particular challenge, acquiring SCUBA certification, or another activity linked to academic or paraprofessional interests. B. Students who cannot come to the regularly scheduled class meeting should enroll in Sec. 0102, and an independent meeting time will be arranged. C. In the Spring 2009 semester, graduate assistant Mandy Izadi offers the course "Race, Gender and Technology" as part of the Sec. 0102 offerings. From time to time, courses related to the particular interests of staff and students will be offered. |
