This table lists extra-curricular activities sponsored by the Scholars community and the STS Program. You will find timely information about some of these activities at the main Scholars website.
Alumni are welcome to participate in upcoming activities; please contact the STS office to express your interest. If you are an upperclassman who wishes to be a student team leader on Service Day or for the Ropes Course, or wishes to go on a field trip, email Dr. Mendelsohn.

All 1st year students in College Park Scholars joined local organizations to serve the larger community. In 2009 we worked for the farm of Engaged University and the master gardener of the City of Takoma Park. |

On Monday, September 21, 2009, STS freshmen in Colloquium participated in a 2-hour "ropes course" at the Eppley Recreation Center challenge course. |

Lecture |
On Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, Prof. Beth Linker was the STS Program's guest lecturer, speaking on "Flat Feet and Draft Dodging." The event was co-sponsored by the President's Commission on Disability Issues, the Miller Center for Historical Studies, and other campus entities. |

In 2009, freshmen enrolled in the CPSP 118T colloquium toured the CALCE (Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering) in Martin Hall. In 2008 we toured the Military Advanced Training Center (MATC) at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. |

Each Fall, teams of freshmen use Metro to get photographs of their team at notable locations in downtown Washington. |

In 2009, Scholars students toured the UMCP's state-of-the-art Cogeneration Power Plant (Building 001). Chuck Edwards and Dallas Smith led 6 tours for the Scholars STS freshmen enrolled in CPSP 118T. Open Houses |
Scholars Open House days occur in the Cambridge Community Center. STS students and alumni interact with high school students who visit campus to learn more about STS. |

STS freshmen toured the Campus Research Reactor, complete with seeing the "blue glow." Thanks to Ian Gifford and Dr. Al-Sheikhly and the other graduate students. |

STS students and alumni are welcome to participate in the Scholars-wide weekend trip to New York City. In 2010 we will visit the American Museum of Natural History. |

STS Guest Speaker |
In 2010 the STS annual guest speaker will be Gregg Mitman. In 2009, historian Gabrielle Hecht spoke about the Uranium trade in Africa. The STS speakers are co-sponsored with Gemstone, the University Certificate Program in STS, and the Maryland Colloquium on the History of Technology, Science and Environment, MCHOTSE. |

Academic Showcase |
Each spring, sophomores present posters of their Capstone projects at this Scholars-wide celebration of undergraduate research. This is followed by the annual STS party for all current students and alumni. |

Early in May, students all of the Scholars programs compete against each other, with the winning team donating funds to a charity. In 2009, the Kennedy Krieger Institute received about $300 from students. |

Scholars holds orientations for students who have been admitted to the STS program. STS students are welcome to volunteer to speak to the rising freshmen about campus life, courses, Scholars, etc. |
