Alumni are welcome to participate in upcoming activities; please contact the STS office to express your interest.

All 1st year students in College Park Scholars join local organizations to serve the larger community. In recent years we have worked with parks in Prince George's County run by the Maryland National Capital Parks and Planning Commission. On August 29, 2008, we removed Japanese Stiltgrass with the Anacostia Watershed Society at two of these parks. |

Lecture |
On Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, Prof. Beth Linker was the STS Program's guest lecturer, speaking on "Flat Feet and Draft Dodging." The event is co-sponsored by the President's Commission on Disability Issues, the Miller Center for Historical Studies, and other campus entities. All Scholars students and all UMCP faculty/staff are invited to participate in a field trip organized by STS and funded by "Scholars On the Hill." It is to the Military Advanced Training Center (MATC) at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where service personnel learn to use prostheses. The field trip is Friday, Oct. 3. |

On Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, all first year STS students take a recreational, 2-hour "ropes course" at the Eppley Recreation Center challenge course. |

Scavenger Hunt |
Teams of freshmen use Metro to get pictures of their team at notable locations in downtown Washington, Silver Spring and Bethesda. Teams load their photos on Facebook for a competition of best team photos. |
November |
Field Trip |
All Scholars students and all UMCP faculty/staff are invited to participate in a field trip organized by STS. It is to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, where federal labs conduct state-of-the-art research. Recommended for any undergraduate seeking summer research internships. |

STS students and alumni are welcome to participate in the Scholars-wide weekend trip to New York City. |

STS Guest Lecture |
On April 25, historian Gabrielle Hecht will be the annual STS guest lecturer, speaking on the Uranium trade in Africa. Her visit is co-sponsored with Gemstone, the University Certificate Program in STS, and with the Marylnd Colloquium on the History of Technology, Science and Environment MCHOTSE. |

Academic Showcase |
On May 1, sophomores present posters of their Capstone projects at this Scholars-wide celebration of undergraduate research. |

Softball Tournament |
On May 2, students in the 12 Scholars programs compete against each other, with the winning team donating funds to a charity. In 2008, the Kennedy Krieger Institute received $298 from student and an anonymous matching donation. |

Open Houses |
Scholars Open House days occur in the Cambridge Community Center. Students and alumni are welcome to speak with high school students who visit campus to learn more about STS. |

Orientations |
Scholars holds orientations for students who've been chosen for the STS program. STS students are welcome to volunteer to speak to the rising freshmen about campus life, courses, Scholars, etc. |
