College Park Scholars 12th Annual Charity Softball Tournament
April 15, 2009
On Saturday, May 2, 2009, each College Park Scholars program will participate in the 12th Annual "Step Up to Bat for Kids" Charity Softball Tournament. The event will begin at 10 a.m. on the engineering fields. College Park Scholars will provide lunch.
“Step Up to Bat for Kids” has raised money for several charities, both local and global. Last year, participants raised more than $1,800. This year, to date, students have collected a total of $2,352 for various charities. The programs who make the final four semifinals will divide the money raised among the four charities.
Students from every program have been fundraising since the beginning of the academic year. Faculty, staff and students have given their time and energy to organizing and preparing sponsorships, logistics and all the details that make the day special.
In 1998, a sophomore Scholar in the Advocates for Children program founded the College Park Scholars Charity Softball Tournament as a capstone project. Since its inception, the tournament has raised more than $15,000 in support for area charities and non-profit organizations. College Park Scholars is thrilled to have received generous donations from the College Park Scholars Alumni Association and the Joseph family.
The tournament is also being aided by a Pepsi grant, support from the Department of Resident Life Residence Hall Councils, and support from the College Park Rotary Club.
