Science, Discovery & the Universe Announces New Director

April 1, 2009

After three years as co-director of Science, Discovery and the Universe (SDU), this April Stephen White, Associate Research Scientist with the Department of Astronomy, will join the Air Force Research Laboratory as a Senior Research Radio Astronomer.  For the next several months, Dr. White will commute between College Park and Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts, until the Laboratory is relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico.

White’s replacement as Co-Director of SDU is Dr. Neal Miller, also a radio astronomer from the Astronomy Department. Miller currently teaches the SDU sophomore colloquium and has a long history of involvement with the program. He was previously at Johns Hopkins University and moved to College Park last fall. According to Professor Stuart Vogel, Chair of the Department of Astronomy that sponsors SDU, “Neal brings an excellent teaching record to the program; his colloquia with SDU have focused on the thought process of science and its interaction with the public. He enjoys the interaction with SDU students and hopes to involve some of them in his research.” Miller and continuing SDU Co-Director Dr. Alan Peel look forward to their collaboration to further strengthen the SDU program.
