Stewart Participates in Fulbright International Education Administrators Seminar
November 28, 2006
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Greig Stewart, Executive Director for the University of Maryland's College Park Scholars program, was one of 24 grantees nationwide, who participated in the 2006 Fulbright Seminar for U.S. Administrators in International Education, held in Germany and the Czech Republic. The seminar, sponsored by the U.S. State Department, was conducted Oct. 7-25 by the Fulbright Commission.
Starting in Berlin, Stewart and other seminar participants met with academic administrators at Humboldt University and the Free University, and with students enrolled in the vocational training program at Siemens AG. While in the Czech Republic, seminar participants met with faculty and administrators at Charles University and the University of West Bohemia. Stewart continued his seminar in Munich where he visited with representatives from the Munich Technical University (TUM) and Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU), two of the three universities recently recognized as winners in Germany's elite university competition.
"Even though I lived overseas as a Peace Corps volunteer and have traveled abroad numerous times, this exchange with European educators was a professionally transforming experience. It reinvigorated my commitment to promote study abroad opportunities to all students, faculty and administrators in the Scholars community," observed Stewart.
The program introduced grantees to the changes in European higher education resulting from the Bologna Declaration in 1999, designed to establish a system of comparable degrees (Bachelors/Masters) and universal transcripts to promote student and career mobility throughout Europe. Additionally, participants were introduced to the society and culture of Germany and the Czech Republic through tours and attendance at cultural events.
