Scholars Inducted Into Phi Kappa Phi; Kalasinsky Receives Outstanding Junior Award

12 College Park Scholars were inducted into Chapter 22 of Phi Kappa Phi. Established in 1920, Phi Kappa Phi is the oldest honor society at Maryland that recognizes academic excellence across all disciplines.
The University of Maryland Chapter invites juniors and seniors in the top 10 percent of their class, and graduate students with a grade point average of at least 3.9 for induction. Faculty members, alumni, and staff are also selected on the basis of outstanding achievement. At Sunday's initiation, the following Scholars were inducted:
Melissa Boudreau - American Cultures
Morgan Eig - Advocates for Children
Benjamin Shapiro - Advocates for Children
Alison Volski - Advocates for Children
Kailyn Montemore - Arts
Victoria Kalasinsky -- Earth, Life and Time
Kristen Lockwood - Earth, Life and Time
Bryan Dickinson - Environmental Studies
Robert Simmons - Environmental Studies
Lisa Kelton - International Studies
Mark Layer - Life Sciences
Carolyn Mech - Media, Self and Society
In addition to initiating new members, each fall Chapter 22 identifies outstanding juniors to be recognized for their accomplishments. This year's five recipients each received a $1,000.00 scholarship.
Victoria Kalasinsky a 2005 citation recipient in Earth, Life and Time, was recognized as one of this year's outstanding juniors by Phi Kappa Phi. She is majoring in cellular biology and molecular genetics. A 2003 graduate of Sherwood High School, Victoria is the daughter of Victor and Kathryn Kalasinsky of Olney, Md.
Established in 1920, the University of Maryland Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi recognizes and promotes the superior scholarship of students from the Baltimore, Baltimore County, College Park, Eastern Shore and University College campuses of the University System of Maryland. Each year Phi Kappa Phi awards over $450,000 in scholarships and fellowships. The Maryland Chapter complements Phi Kappa Phi National with an additional $20,000 of scholarships awarded annually.
