Scholars Colleagues Honored as Outstanding Mentors

November 10, 2004

Two members of the College Park Scholars program faculty were recently recognized as Philip Merrill Master Teachers, as part of the University's new Philip Merrill Presidential Scholars Program.

25 senior students were selected by the program and asked to identify their most influential K-12 and Maryland teachers. The program creates a scholarship in the teachers' names to be awarded a student who enrolls at Maryland from the teachers' high school or school district. Two of the 25 Presidential Scholars selected Scholars faculty as their mentors. Aaron Taylor, an Arts alumnus, identified Dr. David Solomon, the current co-director of the Arts program. Timothy Potter, a Business, Society and the Economy alumnus, chose Dr. Brian Shaffer, the current BSE associate director.

The new program is made possible by the support of Philip Merrill, a longtime contributor to the University and the namesake of the University's College of Journalism. To commemorate the honors conferred upon both the students and their teachers, the University held a day-long program in early November, the centerpiece of which was a reception and ceremony to recognize the honorees. The rest of the day consisted of seminars and workshops discussing the concept of teaching and mentoring.
