Living and Learning Together

College Park Scholars is what the world of higher education refers to as a living-learning community. The basic principle of a living-learning community is to combine the residential life of the university with the academic life; the social side of college with the academic. Scholars does this by housing students by program and having them take special classes together.

Most College Park Scholars live in the Cambridge Community on North Campus. Traditionally, students in Media, Self and Society live on the 7th and 8th floors of Cumberland Hall. Media freshmen who live on campus are required to live in the Cambridge Community.

The faculty and staff of College Park Scholars work closely with the university's Department of Resident Life to maintain a positive academic social environment in the Cambridge Community. Housing students with similar interests together contributes to the positive atmosphere and aids the students in the pursuit of their degrees.

The Media colloquium and other special Scholars courses are held in the Cambridge Community Center and, in some cases, in the residence halls. Also, the Media, Self and Society program office is on the ground floor of Cumberland Hall, providing students with easy access to the Media faculty and staff. Students are encouraged to visit the Media office; the program faculty and staff can provide valuable support and assistance throughout a student's entire collegiate experience.
