College Park Scholars Remembers Ken Joseph

A Profound Loss for College Park Scholars

Ken Joseph

Ken Joseph, associate director of Media, Self and Society and admissions coordinator for College Park Scholars died Thursday February 5, 2009 at Washington Adventist Hospital. He was 40 years old.

Joseph served the College Park Scholars community from 1999 to present, beginning his career in the admissions office. In 2001, he became Media, Self and Society assistant director, and by 2004 he was serving both efforts as associate program director and admissions coordinator.

He earned bachelor's degrees in both Journalism and Political Science from Pennsylvania State University in 1991.

Joseph is survived by his mother, Ruth Howard Joseph of Louisville, Tenn., as well as his two brothers Kevin Joseph of Baltimore and Bernard Joseph of Washington D.C. and one sister, Kimberly Joseph of Chicago.

The body was returned to Maryville, Tenn. for services and arrangements were to be announced by Foothills Funeral Home, Maryville.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, February 26 at 4:30 p.m. in the University of Maryland Memorial Chapel. Guests attending from off-campus are invited to find complimentary parking behind the Memorial Chapel anytime after 4:00 p.m.

Following the service, Scholars invites everyone to join us at Hank's Tavern & Eats in Hyattsville (adjacent to the Prince George's Plaza Metro Station) to spend time together celebrating Ken's life and his contributions to the University of Maryland.  Friends and colleagues will gather in the large area surrounding the bar and are encouraged to stay as long as they wish.  Guests will be able to purchase food and beverages off the menu and from the bar.  Those who are unable to make the service but plan to join us at Hank's may want to time their arrival in Hyattsville between 5:30 and 6:00.

In addition to Thursday's events, there remains three ways to participate in our remembrances of Ken:

Contribute to the Memory Book that will be given to Ken's family.  Feel free to share fond memories, write a message for Ken, express wishes to the Joseph family, or whatever you feel is appropriate. Contributions can be sent to tribute@collegeparkscholars.com.  If you prefer to include something handwritten (no larger than 8-1/2 X 11), feel free to drop it off at the main Scholars office, 1125 Cumberland Hall, between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm.  Please submit your items for the book no later than noon on Tuesday, February 24, 2009 so we have time to assemble it for Thursday.

Those who have pictures with and of Ken are invited to e-mail them to tribute@collegeparkscholars.com for possible inclusion in the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, the family has directed that memorial contributions may be made to the College Park Scholars program at the University of Maryland.
