On-Campus Internship Initiatives and Opportunities

College Park Scholars

For those in the midst of their undergraduate studies, there are opportunities to develop valuable, practical learning experiences by securing internships, exploring different career fields related to academic majors or personal interests, and partaking in civic engagement. At the university and within College Park Scholars, there are various resources for students seeking these experiences.

On Campus Initiatives and Opportunities

The University Career Center’s Web site is a smart place to begin a search for internship and career opportunities. The Career Center is a service providing students with on-campus interviewing, resume referral, and various job listings. A student can search the internship listings by many different types of government sectors including Federal, Foreign Service, Intelligence, Local, Military, Overseas, Public Policy, and State Governments. Additionally, the University of Maryland, College Park provides access to an online database of internships, Internships.com, through a promotion code.

Other resources include listings and e-mails published by various institutions on campus. The student FYI listserv is sent out daily over the University’s e-mail system and frequently relays updates on internships and other opportunities from various internal and external outlets. The College Park Scholars listserv is sent out to all Scholars and contains university-wide updates pertaining to career and internship-related activities.

Networking with College Park Scholars alumni can provide a foundation for many students who wish to pursue particular fields but are not sure where to begin. College Park Scholars Alumni Association (CPSAA) maintains a web site that includes a networking feature to put alumni in touch with one another. Visit www.collegeparkscholars.com to register or use this function if you are a graduate of the living-learning program.

At College Park Scholars, civic engagement is fostered and developed through a series of traditions and initiatives. Awareness begins with Service Day. It continues with program-specific and college-wide service-learning initiatives, such as Lakeland STARS and our annual charity softball tournament. Becoming informed occurs through students' research of the issues they examine in their colloquia and community outreach, as seen in our annual academic showcase and discovery program. Involvement transpires once students are well grounded in the issues and competently trained in advocacy and community-outreach skills.

College Park Scholars has a deep commitment to citizenship and civic life. Voter registration drives, lobbying efforts and legislative action are just a few of the civic endeavors that Scholars tackle.

Scholars provides opportunities for students to become involved in issues through two signature initiatives: Scholars on the Hill and Terrapin Pride Day.

Scholars on the Hill is one of the civic engagement programs offered in College Park Scholars. It allows students to visit nearby Washington, D.C. and examine the federal government in action.

This event series began in the fall semester of 2003 as a joint effort between The Office of the President of Federal Relations, the Alumni Association, and College Park Scholars. Because of its initial success, Scholars received a grant from the Dean of Undergraduate Studies to continue and expand Scholars on the Hill.

Since its inception, Scholars have traveled to Capitol Hill and witnessed key debates on the House Floor; they have visited the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (PTO), met with key officers and learned about career tracks and PTO systems and processes. Scholars have visited laboratories and learned about exciting machinery used at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. They have also explored the Federal Department of Commerce.

On each trip, students have made valuable networking contacts and assisted the University in locating numerous alumni working on the Hill. With each event, Scholars on the Hill reaches more students, allowing them to experience the federal government and learn that it is open to them.

Terrapin Pride Day enables students, faculty, alumni, and all supporters of the university to show their Maryland pride and College Park Scholars has always shown great enthusiasm for the event. Many of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni make the annual trip to Annapolis to share this day with our state's elected officials.

It allows participants to connect with state legislators to highlight the university's accomplishments and ensure our forward momentum.
