Off-Campus Internship Initiatives and Opportunities
College Park Scholars
For those in the midst of their undergraduate studies, there are opportunities to develop valuable, practical learning experiences by securing internships, exploring different career fields related to academic majors or personal interests, and partaking in civic engagement. At the university and within College Park Scholars, there are various resources for students seeking these experiences.
Off Campus Initiatives and Opportunities
The Federal Semester
This program provides students with a close look at the formation of federal policy in Washington. Beginning with a seminar, students learn about the creation and application of federal policy in a topical area. Using this seminar as the cornerstone for the program, along with two additional courses, students take knowledge gained in the classroom and apply it through a policy internship in the federal government or a related organization. To learn more and apply, please visit The Federal Semester application.
Internships in the State Department
Learning experiences in the State Department provide students valuable knowledge for a potential career in foreign affairs. Interns work in a professional capacity on a wide variety of issues managed by the U.S. Department of State and its overseas missions. Internships last one academic semester, or quarter, or for a minimum of 10 weeks during the summer. To learn more and apply, please visit the State Department Web site.
Internships in the U.S. Congress
Interning in Congressional Offices is a great way to begin a career in the public sector, or to simply gain meaningful insight into the democratic process by viewing and analyzing the Senate and the House of Representatives as these bodies function on a daily basis. Most Congressmen offer internships in both their local offices and in D.C. They are often unpaid but usually offer college credit, depending on the number of hours worked per week. Internships are offered during the fall, spring and summer semesters.
