Welcome from our Executive Director
Welcome to College Park Scholars. You've made the right choice. The Scholars' faculty and staff are eager to work with you during the next two years, providing you opportunities to grow intellectually, professionally and personally.
Some refer to the Scholars experience as accelerated immersion. By the time you earn your Scholars Citation (at the end of your sophomore year), you will be well equipped to handle the opportunities available to you in your junior and senior years.
- Need a resume? Undoubtedly you will have written one.
- Need a recommendation for a scholarship or departmental honors program from a faculty member? You will have interacted with a number of faculty who will be able to write you one.
- Need some entry-level research experience? Opportunities abound through the connections you make with your Scholars faculty.
- Need a good friend or two to share the college experience? Our alumni indicate that this is the most prized outcome of participating in Scholars.
Collectively, you comprise some of the best and brightest of the freshman class, so take advantage of all the learning opportunities before you. Look around your colloquium or residence hall for students enrolled in other classes; form study groups with them. Join us each fall and spring as we go to Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress and tour the Capitol. Consider the various study-abroad opportunities in Scholars and offered by the campus, and our annual spring weekend in New York. In your sophomore year, participate in a research project through our Discovery capstone course, or enroll in a supervised internship and present your experience at our annual Academic Showcase.
But don't stop there. Tap your leadership and service potential by volunteering for the Student Advisory Board or Scholars Ambassadors. For those of you living in the Residence Halls, consider participating in the Residence Hall Association. Also think about expanding your service experience from the few hours you will contribute on Service Day, by getting involved with the Scholars community service programs, such as Lakeland Stars.
Scholars prides itself in the community it nurtures. Alumni tell us that Scholars was a place where they not only made their first college friends, but those connections became 'friends for life'. Alumni also say that the close connection they made with Scholars faculty and staff helped them identify valuable contacts for professional references, graduate school recommendations and job leads.
These learning and experiential opportunities challenge you, as Scholars, to do what you do best - make connections between what you are learning with who you are becoming. But we can't help you without knowing something about you, your educational and personal aspirations. With 900 new students joining Scholars, I need your help in meeting each of you over the next two years. Don't hesitate to stop me in the Cambridge Community, or come by my office in 1128 Cumberland Hall. Introduce yourself and tell me a bit about what you hope to gain from your four years at Maryland. Together with the Scholars faculty and staff, I'm here to help you make the most of your Scholars experience.
A sincere welcome to each and every one of you,
Greig Stewart
