Student Advisory Board
College Park Scholars
Looking for an involvement opportunity in your freshman and sophomore years? The College Park Scholars Student Advisory Board provides a unique leadership opportunity for students to serve their peers, their programs, and their community. The Student Advisory Board assumes multiple roles within the Cambridge Community, including:
Providing student voices to the Scholars Executive Director and Central Staff;
Communicating curricular, extracurricular, and noteworthy components of their program experiences to the Executive Director and to other board members;
Assisting in the management of Scholars-wide events such as Service Day, Terrapin Pride Day, Scholars Semi-Formal, and the annual Charity Softball Tournament and its fundraising efforts;
Responding to incidents, concerns, or issues within the Cambridge Community or on campus.
Student Advisory Board members also serve on smaller sub-committees focused on topics of Student Activities, Advocacy, and Academic Affairs. Committees are open to (and recruit from) all students in Scholars. The committee descriptions are as follows:- Academic affairs: Members are responsible for raising interest in and awareness of learning opportunities outside of the classroom such as internships, study abroad, and service-learning. They also help Scholars build experiences that lead to future scholarship and prestigious learning opportunities; promote a positive academic environment within Scholars such as educating about academic integrity; sponsor breaks during finals in the CCC; and hold learning assistance Service programs (e.g., time management, relaxation) in the community.
Student activities:
Committee members are responsible for planning events for the community that build a stronger Scholars identity and give students an opportunity to interact in positive ways. In 2008, the group planned and hosted the first-ever Scholars semi-formal dance. Also, they are planned for Fall social activities. Members may also serve as representatives to campus committees requesting student representation from Scholars (e.g., Saturday of Service).- Advocacy: This group is responsible for focusing on "making our community a better place." Examples of efforts this committee may initiate include activities to promote recycling (in conjunction with University initiatives and Scholars programs); arranging voter registration; planning service activities; connecting students to other advocacy opportunities on campus; and/or sponsoring blood drives.
Non-Advisory Board Scholars who want to become part of a sub-committee should e-mail Marybeth at marybeth@umd.edu with contact information and committee preferences.
Past Student Advisory Board members have said the following about their involvement:
"I enjoy being a part of something big."
"I feel like I am providing genuine input into Scholars."
"I enjoy getting to know members of other programs and being more involved in my program and Scholars as a whole."
"The Scholars Student Advisory Board is a great leadership development opportunity. It helped me become aware of other campus leadership opportunities."
Each Scholars Program has two seats on the Board - one freshman and one sophomore. Give strong consideration to applying for the upcoming academic year. To download the Student Advisory Board application, please visit this page.
