The Cultures of the Americas student must satisfy all the requirements of the program. These include the following: A one (1) credit colloquium in the fall semester of the freshman year followed by a three (3) credit mandatory course designed to introduce the student to the content and methodology of such a program.
The second year the students take a two (2) credit colloquium in the fall that includes twenty five ( 25) hours of mandatory service to the community at large. The final semester is again three (3) credits which the student can fulfill via an internship or by writing a research paper based on our sponsored winter travel to a specific area in the Americas.
The students also need to take two (2) other courses to satisfy their electives. Such courses are to be taken in consultation with the director of the program. The selections are many and varied but must be related either American Studies and/or other subjects related to the Americas (e.g., Caribbean Literature, South American History, Mayan architecture, US Govt. and Politics, etc.). The mandatory three-credit course and the two electives can also be used to fulfill general university Core course requirements. |
