Civic Engagement

College Park Scholars

Aware - Informed - Involved... At College Park Scholars, civic engagement falls into three categories of initiatives: Making students aware; becoming informed; and being actively involved in one's learning. Awareness begins with Service Day. It continues with program-specific and college-wide service-learning initiatives. Becoming informed occurs through students' research of the issues they examine in their colloquia and community outreach. Involvement transpires once students are well grounded in the issues and competently trained in advocacy and community-outreach skills. Scholars provides opportunities for students to become involved in issues through Scholars on the Hill, Terrapin Pride Day, lobbying legislators in Annapolis, or participating in public service internships.

College Park Scholars provides civic engagement opportunities through the following areas:

Community Service-Learning

Service-learning combines community service with critical reflection and analysis. Service-Learning is more than just doing a "good deed." Through service-learning experiences, the community becomes a classroom in which students work with members of the community to address community issues and needs, and build on community strengths and assets. For more information, please visit our Community Service-Learning site.

Undergraduate Research

Where does knowledge come from? Answered most simply, knowledge comes from searching and examining how life in all its variations shows itself. Such repeated searching -- research -- is a foundation of the university experience at all levels from undergraduates to experienced faculty and staff. College Park Scholars encourages all of its students to participate in meaningful, exciting research through many avenues including the popular Scholars' "Discovery Research" courses. For more information, please visit our Discovery site.

Civic Engagement Programs

College Park Scholars is an active community of students that are deeply involved in the Cambridge Community and the University at large. Scholars are leaders across the campus in many organizations and have assumed a critical role in enhancing the reputation of the University of Maryland around the country. In addition to the University community, Scholars make an impact beyond the campus. College Park Scholars has a deep commitment to citizenship and civic life. Voter Registration drives, lobbying efforts and legislative action are just a few of the civic endeavors that Scholars participates in. For information on two of our most significant programs, please visit our Terrapin Pride Day site and our Scholars on the Hill site.

Internship Opportunities

Location! Location! Location! Students from around the country envy the internship opportunities available to students at schools in the greater Washington, D.C. area. As students begin to consider career plans and opportunities, internships with the local, state, or federal government are not to be overlooked, particularly when the University of Maryland campus is just eight miles from the nation's Capitol.
