Welcome
Finale of the Metropolis Spring 2002 Fair

Welcome to the College Park Scholars in the Arts homepage, one of twelve programs in College Park Scholars. We are a two-year, living learning program featuring some of the most creative students on campus! Whether it be a trip to see the Broadway Musical Rent, taking a ballroom dancing workshop, painting murals in the dorm, seeing a B.B. King concert, or performing at the annual Spring fair, the College Park Scholars in the Arts program offers a broad range of opportunities. We have students from various majors across campus; they need not be arts majors.

The College Park Scholars in the Arts program features the following:

A Hands-On Environment

In the fall semester, students select to be a part of various arts workshops. Past workshops have included: guitar, television and video production, web page design, jazz dance, cooking, African drumming, photography and acting. In the spring, students participate in our Arts Faire, open to the university and the public at large. A new tradition is holding the event on Maryland Day to allow more people to experience the arts. Themes have included the Renaissance, Cartoons and Comics, and also the 70's. All-day performances from singers, actors, instrumentalists, jugglers, puppeteers, dancers and a gallery of impressive artwork as well, this is the highlight of the College Park Scholars in the Arts season.

Exploration of Local Arts Opportunities

Each semester, students visit a number of sites in the Washington/Maryland area. Past field trips have included: Hamlet at the Folger Shakespeare Theater, the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center, Steve Martin's Picasso at the Laipin Agile at Ford's Theater and the Art Nouveau exhibit at the National Gallery. All freshmen are quickly oriented with Washington DC; during their first week on campus, they participate in the College Park Scholars in the Arts Washington Metro Photo Scavenger Hunt! We also plan one large excursion during the year. We've visited New York, Philadelphia, Princeton, NJ and New Hope, PA.

Quality Interaction with Faculty

classroom

Our faculty is dedicated to the program. Our faculty represents many of the arts disciplines across campus and helps students find access to the many campus and area opportunities. The faculty believes it is important to get to know the students as individuals. Students are encouraged to take an active role in the program. Student Leaders design and run the Spring fair each year. These students teach alongside the teaching assistants and directors. Our offices are located in Bel Air Hall, the Arts Scholars Dorm.

A Community of Artists

The Arts Scholars live together in Bel Air Hall. The convenience of living in the same building helps students bond and be creative together in exploring all forms of art. The students themselves run the Spring Fair each year with the directors and teaching assistants serving as advisors. Students plan, build and publicize the fair as a community. All students become actively involved in all aspects of the program. In addition, some of our graduating students come back as teaching assistants in the program.
