First Year Courses

CPSP 118C: Colloquium (1 credit)

This first semester colloquium is an introductory course to the world of children. Students are exposed to some of the experiences of children and how these experiences relate to the role of being an advocate. Students reflect on how their learning about children's issues informs how they speak up for children among their peers, in larger social contexts, and in various public forums. The colloquium covers three broad areas: ages and stages of childhood; domains of the whole child; and worlds of children.

EDHD 230: Human Development and Societal Institutions (3 credits; supporting course)

This course is about the development of individuals in the context of relationships with the formal and informal institutions in society. The course will examine various aspects of human development from the broad perspective of the social sciences.

CPSP 218C: Advocacy and Discovery (1 credit)

This course focuses on discovery - both of self and the world of knowledge - to help students better understand and position themselves (personally and professionally) for advocacy work in their futures. In this course, students will: discover and articulate their unique strengths, talents, and values; determine how advocacy for children fits into their future career and life goals; build a professional portfolio that describes their Advocates program experience; and query the process of knowledge acquisition.
