College Park Scholars

Information for Interested Students Not Invited to College Park Scholars

Admission to College Park Scholars (Scholars) is by invitation. Students who have applied to the University of Maryland by the University's priority deadline (November 1, 2007 for Part 1 of the Application and December 1, 2007 for Part 2 of the Application) receive priority consideration. We review applications with a broad set of criteria that can be organized into three main areas: academic ability, potential for contributing to our living-learning community (factors such as dedicated involvement in activities outside the classroom), and the potential for enhancing or encouraging discussions, both inside and outside the classroom, that address issues from a variety of perspectives. We have no set high school grade point average or SAT criteria for students that we invite, so whether an applicant is selected is up to our admissions review committee, which is made up of members of the Scholars faculty and staff.

We plan to enroll 900 new students for the fall 2008 semester to fill 12 different programs. At this time we have extended all of the invitations we plan to extend. In the event that any individual program falls below (or projects to fall below) its enrollment goal, we will consult a waitlist of interested students. If you are interested in being placed on the waitlist for Scholars, you should complete our College Park Scholars Waitlist Application and submit the form to our office.

Should we need to go to the waitlist, we will examine your Scholars Waitlist Application (including your application essay) along with your University of Maryland application on file with the Office for Undergraduate Admissions. Students expressing interest in programs that we project to be available will have priority; however, program choice will not be the only factor for admittance.

Please also note that the College Park Scholars programs in the Arts; Business, Society, & the Economy; International Studies; Life Sciences; Media, Self & Society; and Science, Technology, & Society are frequently chosen as first-choice programs by students invited to College Park Scholars. As a result, these are very competitive programs and likely will not be accepting students from the Scholars waitlist.

We may admit waitlisted students at any time during the spring or summer, so it would be beneficial to submit the Scholars Waitlist Application earlier as opposed to later. This decision will be based not only on the applicant's qualifications but also on the availability of space within the College Park Scholars programs. Obviously, being placed on the College Park Scholars waitlist in no way guarantees that a student will get into any College Park Scholars program.

We will acknowledge receipt of your Waitlist Application with an email response (unless you request otherwise) and notify you via email of your final decision as soon as possible.
