Choosing the Right Program For You

College Park Scholars

The first step in completing the Scholars Interest Inventory is determining which program is right for you.

Enclosed in your Scholars information packet should be the Scholars brochure--this is the place to start. The brochure provides general information about Scholars, as well as a brief description of each Scholars program.

Another place for valuable information is our web site. The web site has more information on specific courses that programs require. Also, all of the Scholars programs have developed web sites of their own that will also give you more information.

"Should I choose a program that goes with my major?" This is a common question that we get regarding the choice of programs. Because of the flexible course requirements for Scholars, students can choose any program and be in any major.

Most of the courses that students take for their Scholars program count for University CORE requirements, general education requirements that all students have to take at the University. CORE courses fall into three broad categories: arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and math and sciences. Many of the requirements for the Scholars Arts program, for example, count as CORE courses in the arts and humanities. Because of this overlap with CORE requirements, Scholars provides students with a great opportunity to explore different majors.

Housing Restrictions. Please note that the Life Sciences program and the Media, Self & Society program require first-year students who live on campus to live in College Park Scholars housing during their first year of the program. If this will pose a problem for you, please do not list either program as a program preference. Students who will not reside on campus are welcome in all programs.

The Scholars Office can arrange for you to speak with a faculty member or a current student if you have any specific questions. Call the Scholars Office at 301-314-2777 for more information.

Scholars will also have information sessions during the University of Maryland's Spring Open Houses. The dates for this spring's Open Houses are as follows:
