Civic Engagement at Scholars

Community Service-Learning

If you are like many students in Scholars, you came to the University of Maryland having participated in a variety of community service activities during high school. By becoming involved with community service learning through Scholars you have an opportunity to take these experiences to the next step.

Scholars Annual Service Day provides an early for opportunity for Scholars to engage in service on campus, in the city of College Park, and in other communities around and beyond the University of Maryland.

Each Spring, the Scholars community participates in the "Step to Bat for Kids" Charity Softball Tournament, a day of fun and competition in the name of charity that raises hundreds of dollars for charities that benefit children.

Lakeland STARS offers an enriching way to be involved with the community. Each semester approximately 40 Scholars can participate in this academic enrichment program with children from Paint Branch Elementary School in College Park, Maryland.

Many of the Scholars programs integrate community service learning into their activities. During the sophomore capstone, students in many of the Scholars programs have the option of participating in a service-learning course or creating an internship experience within a non-profit organization.

Many resources exist to help you find a service opportunity that is right for you, develop your skills in leadership through service, or explore service opportunities after college. Be sure to use the many resources available through Community Service-Learning, 1120 Stamp Student Union, 301-314-CARE.
